Eastern Illinois Blowout

Oct 11 2009

Yesterday’s game against Eastern Illinois was a total blowout. Penn State won 52-3. Most of the game was overcast which lead to some even lighting and better faces than usual for noon games.

Brett Brackett scores a touchdown.

Chaz Powell catches a 51 yard pass for a touchdown. Defensive pass interference flags were thrown but he still managed to catch the ball and score. I didn’t have time to grab my wider lensed camera, so I had to shoot this extremely tight. The focus on the ball is tack-sharp but his face isn’t. That’s what you get with 560mm so close.

(Canon 1D Mark II, 560mm, 1/6400, f/4, ISO 400)

Not too long after, Clark throws to Derek Moye for a 25 yard touchdown. This time I switched to my 17mm lensed camera. This is a big crop since 17mm even on a 1.6x crop camera will fill the viewfinder with the whole stadium.

The stadium was empty, especially toward the end of the game.

Moon

Oct 1 2009

Here’s a boring shot of the moon I took tonight. I’m looking to invest in a really good astrophotography telescope mount for my camera that can follow the relative motion of the stars. That will allow me to take long exposures and capture cosmic wonders.

The below shot is just my 400 + 1.4x TC on a tripod shot with my 5DII.

Penn State vs Iowa

Sep 29 2009

Penn State played a pathetic game against Iowa this past weekend. It rained all day and was absolutely miserable to shoot. Nothing too exciting happened, either, and I don’t have many great shots.

One of the first plays was awesome when Daryl Clark threw the ball deep to Chaz Powell for a touchdown.

Football vs Temple

Sep 21 2009

The football game this weekend against Temple was pretty boring. Nothing exciting really happened and there were few photographic moments. Below are my best from the day, though they’re pretty lame.

Mickey Shuler catches a TD right in front of me early in the game. If only I had picked up my wide instead of my 135 in the heat of the moment, I probably would have captured a cooler picture.

Football vs Syracuse

Sep 14 2009

This weekend’s Penn State vs Syracuse game was one of the more boring games that I’ve ever shot. Not too much really happened and there were few memorable plays that were cool to freeze photo-wise. Here are some of my shots. Click through to see a shot of me and my lens at the game.

Football vs Akron

Sep 5 2009

I got a 400 2.8! It’s the best lens ever. Seriously, I wasn’t expecting it, but the greatest fact about this lens is how fast it focuses. It is many times faster at locking focus from a stop than my 300 f/4. The percentage of shots in focus have gone up to at least 90% from probably 70. It makes such a difference and was definitely worth the investment. Other than that, it’s a good deal longer than my 300 and the depth of field is a lot shallower and the background bokeh is absolutely beautiful. The only disadvantage is that it’s a beast to haul around at 12 pounds.

Today was the first Penn State football game versus Akron. Last night kicked off the football season with Football Eve in Beaver Stadium.

Men's and Women's Soccer Begin

Aug 30 2009

I’ve moved back to school and have finally settled into my new house. First week of classes went smoothly, and I started shooting sports again. I am on the verge of buying a 400mm 2.8, so these will hopefully be my last photos with my 300 f/4. The extra stop will help a lot with night games, especially with my 1D Mark II which looks pretty bad at ISO 3200.

Anyway, here are a few photos from the last 2 games I shot. Excuse the grain from my 1D.
